Did You Know: There are different “levels” of hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid is well researched for its proven benefits in topical skincare applications, but did you know there is more than one type?
One of the most common forms of hyaluronic acid used in skincare products is called sodium hyaluronate. Characterized by its very high molecular weight (800 kDa and higher), sodium hyaluronate doesn't easily penetrate the stratum corneum. Instead, this active ingredient sits on top of your skin, and moisturizes by its hygroscopic qualities (drawing water towards it).
In contrast, low molecular weight hyaluronic acid (around 50-100 kDa) excels at skin penetration, and is scientifically shown to fight against & reduce wrinkles.
Smaller than this is very low molecular weight hyaluronic acid (less than 10 kDa). Surprisingly, this can have adverse effects on your skin, and can trigger a pro-inflammatory response. Consequently, they should be avoided for regular topical use to maintain skin health.
